The name "Hermes Trismegistus" is the pseudonym of the writer of "The Corpus Hermeticum" in the first century CE. The Corpus Hermeticum is a mixture of Neoplatonism, Gnosticism, Judeo-Christian morality, and that which woud later come to be called "hermetic alchemy". Subsequently, other writers used the same pseudonym, pretending to be the same person.

In the name "Hermes Trismegistus", the word "trismegistus" means "thrice-master".
