The history of post-humanity begins with the planet closest to Sol. The Mercurians began as several strains of feral procyonids, well-evolved but wildly mentally unstable. These proto-Mercurians simply started appearing near multiple Terran biotech facilities, stealing food and shiny objects. By the time they were discovered, the Mercurians were walking erect and speaking a primitive, cryptic language. Lacking a better explanation, the humans assumed they were a biotech accident and took responsibility for their further development.

By the time of the Mercurian settlement, Terran psychogeneticists had successfully programmed the raccoon people with a semblance of coherence, preserving their great ingenuity at the cost of extreme seasonal mood swings and a host of peculiar obsessions. This bipolarism actually helped the Mercurians adapt to their new planet's harshly divergent climates: Mercurians on the "cold" side became cerebral and withdrawn, retreating to catacomb-like burrows to indulge their intellectual compulsions in private, while exposure to the "hot" side left them bubbly and lascivious, prone to swarm the terraformed beaches wearing nothing but beads.
